Central nervous system and Brain » Stroke

Stroke is a medical emergency, when the blood flow to the brain stops. It is the third most leading cause of death worldwide; however, if the signs of the onset are recognized earlier, then there are a lot of chances that the patients’ life can be changed.

The indications of stroke include:

• Sudden weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face arm or the leg especially on one side of the body.

• Loss of speech or trouble talking or understanding language.

• Sudden loss of vision, particularly in only one eye.

• Sudden severe headache with no apparent cause.

• Unexplained dizziness, loss of balance or coordination (especially if associated with any of the above symptoms).

• Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs) also known as ‘mini-strokes’ are often the warning signs of more serious and debilitating stroke in the future. TIA can occur days, weeks or even months before a serious stroke.

• Signs of TIAs are same as that of stroke but they last for a much smaller duration (few minutes to 24 hours).

• They may include temporary loss of vision on one eye.

• Problems with speech

• Temporary paralysis, numbness, tingling and drooping eyelid generally on one part of the body.
